…Jim looked around and discovered he was standing near the end of his back yard.
How did I get here? Damn it. A minute ago I was in Dr. Gerrittson’s video conference room was watching a video about my…my… Damn it!... Wait… I do remember! It was a video of me skipping around like a nut in this very back yard.
Jim considered his options. When he realized he really didn’t have any, at least not any with a positive outcome, his heart sank and he rose and lumbered back toward the house, cupping his still throbbing left arm.
The moon hung big and low in the sky, and as the evening wind swept across the grass, Jim looked around and tried to piece together all the things he had done while on his latest ‘excursion’.
Probably doing godknowswhat out here like a flippin idiot… He shook his head in frustration when he thought of what he had seen on the video tapes. Why can’t I remember? Why does that part always draw a blank?
As the wind again swept over the grass and rustled the nearby trees, Jim, now very tired, raised his collar and sat down on the chilly September grass and bowed his head.
“Dad?”
Startled, he looked up. Standing over him in a dark gray pants suit with a light tan knee length rawhide coat was Anne. “Are you okay?” she asked as she extended her hand. The wind blew her hair and coat back, making her look like a caped superhero in silhouette. “I was watching you from the back deck and saw you suddenly sit down. Is everything all right?”
“Yeah… No… I don’t know,” Jim said as he took her hand, climbed to his feet, and brushed the back of his pants. “I can’t explain it. It’s like falling into a coma. You wake up months later with no idea what happened during the time you were unconscious.”
Anne took her father’s arm, gently leaned against him and walked him back to the house in the moonlight. “It must be very unsettling,” she said. “Actually—horrifying.”
She stopped and turned to face him, tightening her hand on his arm. “I so wish I could do something to help.”
Jim saw the hurt, concern, fear, and just about every other soul-wrenching emotion in every small line on her face as the ghost of that three-year-old girl with the green sparkling eyes superimposed itself. That trusting little girl who told him he made her feel safe. And as he continued to gaze into her eyes, he saw the same desperate helplessness he himself felt those many years ago.
Daddy, please help me!
And that look tore at old wounds because Jim knew the horror of being completely helpless while your loved one suffered.
What was worse was that this horror—the one he was putting his daughters through—apparently had no end. At least when Anne had the flu, the worst was over in a single night. A single night that left a scar on Jim’s psyche that he would carry to his grave.
